Actors Audition Form

THE THORN is seeking highly expressive actors (20-45) for the upcoming National Tour.  The Thorn is an innovative, theater experience that pairs dance, stunts, acrobatics, aerial arts and special effects alongside traditional stagecraft to tell the epic story of Jesus.  

With the narrative unfolding in this way, all roles are non-speaking. It is essential for actors to be Highly Expressive. The emotional journey that each character takes must be rich, emotional and specific as it is conveyed visually—transcending the use of dialogue

Open Character Roles include:


MARY:

(20s. All ethnicities considered. Middle Eastern, Latina, and black actors encouraged to apply) Mary is a shy, hopeful young woman who thrives when safely surrounded by confident friends and family. But time-after time she is called upon to step into journeys that she does not feel ready for. Her inner strength and resilience is revealed as she’s forced to grow from an unnoticed village girl into the resilient mother of her people’s savior. Non-singing role. Should be a strong mover and be able to maintain a basic percussion rhythm. Role will contain a scene of active birth/labor.


JOSEPH:

(20s-early 30s. All ethnicities considered. Middle Eastern, Latino, and Black actors encouraged to apply) He is the golden boy of Nazareth. Charismatic, Charming and always ready with a winning smile. His life is turned upside down when the love of his life reveals she’s pregnant. His instincts to be a loyal protector struggle to win out, as he doubts he has what it takes to abandon his easy life for her. Should be a strong mover and  be able to maintain a basic percussion rhythm. Non-singing role.


NARRATOR:

(50s. Male. All ethnicities considered. Black, Middle Eastern, Latino actors encouraged to apply) He is the tribe’s chieftain and master storyteller. Large and commanding , his voice reflects his powerful physical build. He is the keeper of the stories of his ancestors, and when he speaks the world seems to hush and listen. Like a loving father, he lives to draw his people together and remind them they are not alone. Non-singing role.


HADDASSAH:

(Late 20s - 30s. All ethnicities considered. Middle Eastern, Latina, and Black actors encouraged to apply) She is tough, capable shepherdess who serves as her clan’s healer and midwife. When we meet her she is grieving the loss of two newborn sheep she was unable to deliver, along with the loss of her purpose. If she can’t do this one thing, who is she? SHEPHERD BARDS:

(20s-40s. Male & Female. All ethnicities) These mysterious herdsmen are the vocal foundation of the show.  At home in the nighttime wilderness, these tough and seasoned watchers are the first to notice signs of a coming Messiah. Seeking performers with powerful vocals and dynamic stage-presence who can hold both solos and ensemble lines. Singing role—please submit a song with your audition reel. (Details below)


SHEPHERD FIDDLER:

(20s-40s. Male & Female. All ethnicities) In the tradition of shows like Lindsey Sterling or Celtic Woman, this role is seeking a charismatic violinist who can combine excellent live performance with dynamic showmanship. This role will also play additional non-speaking ensemble characters. Previous acting experience is beneficial. Please provide a 60-second performance cut of your choosing, along with any recent performance reels that demonstrate theatricality.


CARPENTER DRUMMERS:

(20s-40s. Male & Female. All ethnicities) In the tradition of shows like STOMP and Blue Man Group, these roles are seeking charismatic and showy percussionists. While playing various ensemble characters in the show, the ideal candidate must be a proficient drummer and bring engaging, dynamic showmanship to their performance. Previous acting experience is preferred. Please provide a 30 second percussion demonstration of your choosing, along with any recent performance reels that demonstrates theatricality.

If you are submitting for a SINGING ROLE, you should include a 90-second cut of one of the following:

  • Song from a modern pop musical
  • Song from a contemporary classical musical
  • Contemporary Inspo Song in the style of artists like Lauren Daigle, Jordan Smith or Danny Gokey
